Reality Hits Camp Casey

The last 10 minutes have been very difficult here. I am at the Peace House editing video. First came a phone call that someone drove their vehicle over the Arlington West Crosses at the camp. I will head out to the camp now to get more details.

Within minutes one of the volunteers logged on to a website and learned that her friend was killed in Iraq. She burst into tears, Cindy was sitting across the room and immediately moved over to comfort her. What a reality check.

About an hour ago, wegot a phone call from our friends up at Camp Casey saying that the line of gravemarkers along the road (Arlington West) had been run over. People there said that as they were talking to a few members of the press, a pick-up truck came down the road and stopped at the fork by the edge of the tents. The driver then jumped out and attached a pipe to the undercarriage with a chain and began to "swerve into the line of crosses," said Tammara Rosenleaf from Montana. "Then we heard the pipe being dragged over the gravemarkers and the pick-up’s wheels crushing them."

Out of the 800 crosses, 500 were knocked down and 100 are irreperable. However, the driver was arrested by the local authorities. This is a prime example of how the Crawford sheriff’s department has helped to protect us and our freedom of speech over the past week and a half. A big thank you to them!

Regardless of who did this, the fact is that respect for this country’s dead is not a partisan issue. Putting up memorials of our country’s fallen is not a "liberal" act. It is an American act. Even a group of counter-protestors from Dallas last week draped flags and flowers over many of the gravemarkers, and many were moved to tears at the sight of the long line of dead soldiers. It’s too bad that someone else who disagrees with Cindy felt they needed to wipe out the memory of our fallen in such an obscene manner.

Now, more than ever, is the time for us to come together. We need your voice and your help to bring America closer to an ideal that all of us hold in our hearts. Cindy Sheehan is bringing us closer to that ideal and demonstrating its power to change this country.

  • This says it all about both Bush and the type of people who support him. They not only send people to die for their greed, they then desecrate their memory. No more need be said about them, really.

  • Nothing good ever came out of Texas except for those peace-loving individuals held captive there by circumstance and economic necessity.

  • in texas in 1988, the "rainbow" gathered .... i blocked a jeep yards from our main council circle and was "run over" 9 broken ribs, and a lung punctured several times ....

the people of texas are not what you would think, as i found out ... i had been asked to do the gate for a day at the gather and sang my political songs in the same heat you are in though it was July and not August ... as i met the local’s who were asking me where all the thousands of "rainbows" were , i said they aren’t comming ... heard too many "bad" things about you texan’s ... and as we shared, we realized how effective "someone" has been in convincing us the cultural / political divide was to vast to bridge ....

well, it isn’t ...we bridge it in actions as the one Cindy is taking and all who are supporting her and making their own stand with her ... a circle of american citizens is forming ....that agree on one major point ....

WE WERE LIED TO ABOUT THIS WAR AND FOR THAT REASON ALL TROOPS SHOULD COME HOME !

a lot more can be said ... about the man in the truck, who ran over the crosses, i am hoping/praying that camp casey responds the way the most high spirit of truth and love caused me to respond as i lay on the ground that day in texas .... "total forgiveness, press no charges, and no vengence" that is all i said

when Larry, the man who ran me over came to the hospital to visit me, the hospital staff would not let him, that is / was tragic, as he needed to, his family needed to ... in the end as American Citizens, we both followed our hearts and he was sure i would get out of the way, and i was sure he would stop ... both of us did what we as FREE citizens felt was right and for some reason i lived and the story stopped there ...

the crosses can be put back up and the open hand of forgiveness reached out again, as that is the way we teach each other , to be cool to allow America to be America, if in fact it means what we can all stand on the side of the road and make our positions known.

    noguns, santa cruz, California !!!

    • I was at that gathering, in Texas, and I remember when that happened. Wasn’t that the son of the local sheriff that actually ran you over? I am happy to hear that you made a full recovery: many of your brothers and sisters were worried for you when that happened.

I will say that was a strange gathering, though not as dangerous as the Wyoming gathering where locals attempted to cause injury by setting the nearby dry woods on fire. On the way back from the Texas gathering, while hitch-hiking back to college in Arkansas, I was harrassed quite a bit by locals and truck drivers. But a wonderful, kind woman picked me up and gave me a ride back to Fayetteville.

The act of running over the crosses is despicable. It really shows the spite and mean spirite of some people. The same people who willingly follow Bush and don’t question anything that happens, or that’s purveyed by the Federal government.

I fully support Cindy, and I wish I could travel to Texas to join my fellow citizens in this effort to bring attention to the TRUTH.

  • THIS IS SO SAD!! I wouldn’t doubt it if Rove paid this person a bundle for running over those crosses!
He hates it when he can’t "CONTROL" everything!
