Paul William Roberts in his Globe and Mail article of Saturday, February 26, 2005 wrote the following:

Hunter telephoned me on Feb. 19, the night before his death. He sounded scared. It wasn’t always easy to understand what he said, particularly over the phone, he mumbled, yet when there was something he really wanted you to understand, you did. He’d been working on a story about the World Trade Center attacks and had stumbled across what he felt was hard evidence showing the towers had been brought down not by the airplanes that flew into them but by explosive charges set off in their foundations. Now he thought someone was out to stop him publishing it:
"They’re gonna make it look like suicide," he said. "I know how these bastards think . . ."

Hunter S. Thompson ... was indeed working on such a story.

Now check out this February 25 Associated Press story about Thompson’s death. Sounds a lot like a professional hit with a silencer:

"I
was on the phone with him, he set the receiver down and he did it. I heard the clicking of the gun," Anita Thompson told the Aspen Daily News in Friday’s editions.

She said her husband had asked her to come home from a health club so they could work on his weekly ESPN column...

Thompson
said she heard a loud, muffled noise, but didn’t know what had
happened. "I was waiting for him to get back on the phone," she said.
(Her account to Rocky Mountain News reporter Jeff Kass is slightly different: "I did not hear any bang," she told Kass. She added that Thompson’s son, who was in the house at the time, believed that a book had fallen when he heard the shot, according to Kass’ report.)

Mack White sums up the questions well:
Thompson’s family says he was not depressed, nor was he in enough to pain to kill himself. In fact, by all reports, he was quite happy. He was talking on the phone to his wife, getting ready to work on his column, when he decided it would be wise to kill himself, so that he could go out (we are told) while "still at the top of his form," even though this would mean not finishing his column or his expose on 9/11 (potentially the most important thing he would ever write) (?)...

This account says Thompson killed himself while sitting in a chair on his typewriter and yet the original account tells us that Thompson shot himself while talking to his wife on the phone in the kitchen. Why has the story changed and what is the significance of the word typed on the paper in light of the fact that Thompson said he would be ’suicided’ before being able to release a major story on explosives bringing down the twin towers?

  • I’d heard that theory immediately following the 9-11 disaster...and wondered why no one chose to follow up on it. For me, at least, there’s enough "reasonable doubt" surrounding 9-11, the Bush administration and its various agendas, their outright lies and propaganda campaigns that smear and distort the truth.....that suggests that the "real" terrorist threat to Americans and their way of life finds its home within the various think-tanks that control the Bush administration. With 9-11 providing their "Pearl Harbor" with Americans, the rest was easy. We’ve been had, and thousands of innocent lives lost as a result. We must hold those responsible accountable. Wake up America...it’s getting late.

      Exactly- next in Hitler’s playbook is the ’night of long knives’ where they take out dissenters.

      First Gary Webb and now Hunter S. Thompson- yet another odd coincidence that two dissenting journalists ’commit suicide’ when they are needed most. There is definitely reason to believe the two could have been silenced.

      Webb had knowledge of the CIA-Contra drug connection, perhaps he knew too much about Negroponte... dies just before Negroponte is nominated for Spy Czar.

      Thompson called Bush a ’little bastard’ and said 9/11 was an inside job- "look at who benefits" - bush and the military-industrial complex. 9/11 gave us the global ’war on terror’- war forever- yay.

      Thompson’s last book was "Kindom of Fear"... he also had first hand knowledge of Bush’s drunken stupor days (Hunter once found bush passed out in his bathtub)

      Maybe they call it pre-emptive silencing.

    • yeah suicide indeed!! - there have been many suspicous "suicides" - recently - ukrainian politician "suicided" with two bullets to the head - Journalist Garry Webb "suicided" with two bullets to the head - Iraq WMD whistleblower David Kelly "suicided" by slitting wrists.

    • All of this goes with the Marc Lombardi suicide - which by all accounts probably wasn’t a suicide after all.

  • Are you aware that Paul William Roberts is on the "Do Not Fly" list from Homeland Security. He can no longer enter the United States.

      The reason for his no fly ban could well be an e-mail he sent out to his contacts - but included me by mistake since my e-mail was on his address book, he explained in a subsequent mail to me. It was entitled ’A HAPPY ROSH HASHANAH’ and included an inflammatory part entitled BRIEF RANT. Rant is about the right epithet for it too. It seems this mail might well have been picked up by CIA or FBI e-mail snooping technology. Who knows?

      BRIEF RANT

      All unsolicited advertising is something I regard as worse than finding fresh excrement in one’s mail box or on the desk. Worse, because it invariably pullulates with lies and constitutes at its core a blatant fraud. With the Fortune 500 fleecing investors, peeling them like grapes, I have no great hopes of integrity from any U.S. business. The majority of them are criminal enterprises, engaged in bilking their customers. Profits are unconscionable. A GE lightbulb now lasts 4-6 weeks….probably to emphasise the virtues of their new LOnGLIFE bulbs. The truth is, by now we could have a 30 cent bulb of 100 watts that would last….a lifetime, if not more. Razor blades cost 100s of times more and last far less long than they did 50 years ago. More is spent on packaging than on research by pharmaceutical companies, whose crimes against humanity like price-fixing cartels to suck up funds from Third World nations whose populations starve to pay for medicines; yet more is spent on fraudulently deceiving packages by nearly everyone marketing a product that is obscenely overpriced.

      This is free market capitalism. Of course, ‘free’ is a term that the U.S. defines. American business cannot handle any real competition. Ask Mexico. Ask India. Ask Ottawa.

      Trash and garbage – this is how I view U.S. culture. Its business is outright crime, from the Big Macs that poison our children To the 60 TV channels of stupidity and lies that ought to be outgrown at 12.

      This rant has no end. But I believe every word of it is the absolute truth. If we don’t stop this poisonous tide, and soon, We wont have a world worth living in. Unless we turn to thievery, extortion, blackmail, highway robbery, And murder…
      Like the monkey in the White House when goaded

      This could be so much better a world. If you can’t vote them out, You may want to hire an exterminator.

  • It Is the same M.O. as the reason the US just shot the freed Italian Journalist. Those who know of and will report all the indescribable crimes the U. S. Administration commits just happen to get shot at or to death.Years ago if you were a Dem. Senator running in a close election bid your small airplane would just happen to crash befor the election. After these things happen a few times they are more then suspicious!
    If this US Administration doesn’t want you to speak they will simply take care of you.
    These were not suicides, they were just MORE murders!
    Put Cheney, Bush, Rummy, Condy, Powell, and all of them in prison in Abu Gharab.
    This probably will never happen but someday they will face their Judgement Day and they had better hope that their God hasn’t been paying attention!i

  • yet this is a man that for years, said he would end his own life. He said it to friends, family anyone who knew him knew thats how he wanted his life to end
