Governments Catastrophes USA

by Dwarika Nath Rath from India

We, in the third world countries has an cinematic impression about the sensitivity of the US citizens towards it’s citizens. There is an impression that it can go to any extent and spend billions in the rescue operation of it’s citizens.

The US Govt.s deliberate silence sending warnings to the countries on Tsunami is a well known chapter. And again reaching with aids with heavy military to Srilanka and other S.E. Asia countries is an open truth. The post Tsunami aid was a part of business as the war against terrorism and war against Iraq is a business. It’s only concern is profit over war, calamities and so on.

Why Katrina disaster?

Was it deliberately ignored?

Is it suffering from North-South divide? White-Black racialism?

Has the Govt’s preoccupation in Iraq made it callous?

It is hard to believe what happened in Katrina.

The Katriana calamity has a long-term impact on the ruling class all over the world, for whom the US Govt. is roll model one.

There were unprecedented flood recently in Gujarat, Mumbai in India. These floods had been caused due to water and faulty plantings mostly funded by World Bank , ADB for the so-called developmental programmes which can be termed as development minus human face.It is a common experience that the Governments and it’s machineries are not in sight or ineffective at the time of natural calamities.

The common people come to the rescue of the victims. Rather the Govt’s entry kills the spirit of the voluntarism of the common people. This is our experience during the Super cyclone in Orissa, Killer Earthquakes of Gujarat and the last flood in Gujarat and Mumbai.Rather the calamities has helped the Governments to fulfil it’s unaccomplished task of clearing the slums of the poor.

The Katrina calamity and the US Govt’s response will further legitimise the indifference, and the callous attitude of the Governments. Now the different State Governments in India have started speaking about the global warming, floods in Europe. The attitude is- what a Govt. can do in the face of calamities? So whatever relief the Govt. is giving is more than sufficient.

Now the question is what will be the attitude of the United States to receive Relief’s from other countries and more particularly from the poor countries?

The Katrina has nakedly exposed the US Govt. before the world. Now will it shed it’s super power ego and allow the international community to help the victims of Katrina?
