Militant groups in battle-torn Fallujah have controlled 60 percent of the central Iraqi city and surrounded dozens of US Marines in Jolan district, witnesses said Sunday.

"Defenders of the city are controlling 60 percent of the city and they are encircling dozens of US soldiers in Jolan neighborhood," eyewitnesses who managed to sneak out of the city told Xinhua.

Residents of Fallujah said the southern part of Fallujah, whichis still under control of the militant groups, constitutes the larger part of the city, and US troops only control the north andsmall eastern spots in the city.

"Some American troops are based in government buildings and the yare pounded by fighters," they said.

"In daytime, groups of mujahedeen (Holy War fighters) engage with hit-and-run attacks with US Marines, and at the same time they gear themselves up for the night battles," they said.Fierce fighting and loud explosions resonated throughout Jolan district before the sunset.

US troops continued pounding the area as plumes and columns ofsmoke covered the sky over Jolan and the southern al-Shuhadaa district.

Early this month, US and Iraqi forces launched a major offensiveto crush insurgents, including Zarqawi group, in Fallujah, 50 km west of Baghdad.

About one week later, the US military claimed it had controlled the city. (Xinhuanet)

  • This information is obviously false. Is that you Baghdad Bob?

    • You need to get beyond sound bite news on the telly and the radio. Haven’t you heard that the US ground commanders in Fallujah are screaming for more troops. The Ist Cav’s 2nd Brigade - rotated out of Baghdad for anticipated short duty in the fallujah offensive - is now bogged down there.

The planned January deployment to Iraq of the 3rd Infantry Division is now being pushed up because of the need for more troops.

A brigade-strength force from the 82nd Airborne Division is poised for deployment to Iraq.

6500 hundred troops have had their tours extended another 2 months.

Six new battalions are needed immediately.

US commanders are saying the extra troops are needed to put down areas of resistance all over Iraq, and they have plans to press the offensive into neighborhoods in Fallujah still held by insurgent forces.

Even the New York Times editorialized today that 20,000-40,000 new troops are needed immediately to stabilize the "coalition’s" shaky military position.

Do you think that all of this information is false, as well?

    • how can anyone still believe the US media, eh? i’m beginning to think these freepers are MK ultra zombies... of course it sounds crazy- but that’s what they do- the craziest shit possible then if anyone suggests it- they just holler ’wacko conspiracy theorist’

why do i think they’re mk ultra? (cia mind control experiments in the 60s) because freepers everywhere are so seemingly incapable of a direct conversation- just denial. real humans can answer questions, think for themselves... these freepers just parrot the repub messages (like w), like they have a list of 10 talking points which they use to respond to any and all posts. here’s a test

to the republican: if you are a free-thinking human: read this on depleted uranium

how is this good a good thing? former nuclear waste turned into free material for the weapons makers. we’ve used 4 times as much in this war.... there are 10,000 us soldiers dead from the 1st gulf war- 10,000 young men that were NOT WOUNDED in action, but died from unknown illnesses. how do you justify this? thank you for helping understand the mind of a bush supporter.

    • Do you really want to believe the New York Times after the stuff that they made up prior to the election? You guys have to keep track of what you are saying if you lefties want to be credible. On the one hand you keep saying that the US military and the Iraqi soldiers are committing a massacre in Fallujah and now you say that the US military has shaky control over Fallujah. You guys do not make any sense AT ALL. Which leads me to believe that you really know diddly squat about the situation.

    • Also in Vietnam the US made a massacre, but lost the war....so what?

    • You don’t get it. That poster was trying to tell you that the two accusations contradict each other. Your statement is about winning a battle but losing the war, a point that doesn’t have anything to do with the previous point.
