Attack-Terrorism Governments USA South/Latin America

Will the Real Terrorist Please Stand Up

Luis Posada Carriles is a convicted international terrorist; yet the Bush Administration is protecting him and refusing to extradite him to Venezuela to stand trial for his crimes.

In the meantime the US routinely violates international law: killing Iraqi civilians in an illegal war, imprisoning and torturing thousands of innocent people, acts which Amnesty International has condemned, as well as other crimes too numerous to list here (visit www.PeopleJudgeBush.org for more information.)

The Terrorist

Posada was one of the organizers of the failed Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba in 1961. He was employed by the CIA from approximately 1965 until 1974, after which he ran an international security company in Venezuela. Posada and several of his colleagues were responsible for the bombing of Cubana flight 455 on October 6, 1976 and were imprisoned in Venezuela.

After bribing his way out of prison in Venezuela in September 1985, Posada went directly to El Salvador to work on the illicit contra resupply operations being run by Lt. Col. Oliver North. He has also been tied to the importation of large quantities of cocaine into the US in support of the Contras in Nicaragua in the 80’s .

On November 17, 2000, a group of terrorists led by Posada Carriles was arrested in Panama. Posada and the other terrorists had entered Panama with false documents in order to assassinate Cuban President Fidel Castro during the 10th Ibero-American Summit of Heads of State and Government. (Political assassinations violate both US and international law.) Their weapons, explosives, a sketch of Fidel Castro’s proposed route as well as an agenda of public meetings were seized.Posada was convicted and imprisoned in Panama. He was pardoned by Mireya Moscoso, the famously corrupt president of Panama, just before she left office in 2004.

The US Response

The US government is shielding Posada from extradition to Venezuela and has merely detained him on immigration charges. He is currently in a detention center in Texas. But since immigration cases can take years, this action could amount to placing him in protective custody temporarily to avoid the chance that he will have to face imprisonment for his crimes. The protection of Luis Posada Carriles is part of the ongoing US/CIA war on Cuba and now Venezuela.

When the Criminals are in Charge

The US government has bombed civilians, condemned children to early death by destroying infrastructure necessary to provide clean water and sewage treatment and by insisting on sanctions that prevented access to medical equipment and supplies. In the first gulf war they too blew up a civilian airliner. They have destroyed a nation.

George W. Bush launched an illegal war based on deceit and deception. He has thumbed his nose at the Geneva Conventions and made torture standard procedure. (Visit www.PeopleJudgeBush.org for a more complete description of US war crimes.)

There is no longer any question that George W. Bush, Richard B. Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, and others have committed war crimes. The question each of us must ask ourselves is whether or not we find that acceptable. Should the people responsible for the illegal deaths of tens of thousands of Iraqi civilians be prosecuted and convicted for those crimes or should they continue to run the most dangerous country in the world today.

The Bush administration refuses to extradite Posada because he is one of them. Posada and Bush employ the same illegal tactics toward the same illegal ends. They both have violated international law in their attempts to assassinate foreign leaders (a violation of the “protected persons” portions of the Hague and Geneva Conventions and of US law.)

We demand that all of these criminals be held accountable for their crimes. Posada must be returned to Venezuela to stand trial for the murder of 73 people in the bombing of Cubana flight 455; Bush and his henchmen must be indicted for waging an illegal war> and for war crimes committed during that war. The law demands it, justice demands it, and we demand it.
