Movement Governments USA Mary MacElveen

To my readers around the globe, this column addresses former US Vice President Al Gore’s speech to the nation in defense of the United States Constitution and the Bill of Rights ... these documents are the foundations that we as a civil society live by and whereby everyone must live under the rule of law.

I thought it wise that Al Gore chose to give this speech on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday since he was a moral and just man whose life was cut short by an assassin’s bullet.

Dr. King led us all through a tumultuous time where his message was that everyone is equal under the rule of law and where no one has the right to break any law and that includes the current resident of the White House George W. Bush. I was going to say the American people’s White House ... but it has not been that for five years now.

Al Gore was correct: "The rule of law makes us stronger by ensuring that decisions will be tested, studied, reviewed and examined through the processes of government that are designed to improve policy."

We are in need of a strong America where each and every policy put forth by this nation has been studied, reviewed and examined. The rule of law is the very thing that makes us all Americans and it tells those who do attack us, that if they do, it will not stop us from continuing our moral mission. Breaking any law is immoral and should be punished to the fullest extent of the law ... and that does include Bush. No man, or woman for that matter, is above the law ... if that were the case, we would be living in anarchy.

If you have a child in school come home after studying the amendments to our US Constitution and asks: Why is Bush allowed to break the fourth amendment?

What do you say to your child?

Do you say, well some are allowed to break the law and some are not.

What lesson do we teach our children since they are our future?

At the end of Mr. Gore’s speech he quotes Dr. King: "Perhaps a new spirit is rising among us. If it is, let us trace its movements and pray that our own inner being may be sensitive to its guidance, for we are deeply in need of a new way beyond the darkness that seems so close around us."

In the five years that Bush has led this (USA) country, darkness has surrounded all of us and we need to look within ourselves in order to find a way out of it and into the light. It has not only plunged America into darkness but the global community where through Bush’s dominance; we have alienated friends and allies. The French who came to our aid in forming this more perfect union were vilified for not helping us launch an illegal invasion of a sovereign country. In Germany who lived through one regime under Hitler was pressured economically by this regime to support our invasion of Iraq and thankfully, they stood strong and did not bend.

Both France and Germany stood on their moral ground and it is about time that the American people stand on theirs and demand accountability, checks and balances and tell Bush he has no right to break the law.

When he quoted former Congressman Bob Barr: "The president has dared the American people to do something about it. For the sake of the Constitution, I hope they will." I have to say while I have had my strong disagreements with Mr. Barr in the past, what he said; I stand shoulder to shoulder with him. It is not about Republican versus Democrat, right-wing versus left-wing, red state versus blue state, it is about all of us working together to restore our Constitution. It is about telling Bush that it is not a "god damn piece of paper" that can summarily be tossed aside for his own selfish desires.

That sacred document known as the United States Constitution belongs to all of us!

Listening to Al Gore is akin to a religious experience since I believe in totality in any message he tries to convey. I found myself hanging on every single word today and crying my heart out for a country that is being murdered before my eyes. I found myself praying with all of my might that at some point in the near future, he would say to America and the world community that he does plan on running for president in 2008.

Al Gore stated: "Fear drives out reason. Fear suppresses the politics of discourse and opens the door to the politics of destruction."

We have all witnessed that before our eyes as Bush has used this tool of fear so that we acquiesce whatever power we have left as a people and where we are so willing to turn our backs on the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

As Bush tries to paint leaders such as President Hugo Chavez as being a threat to all of us, what truly is our greatest threat is our unwillingness to confront those in Washington, D.C.

Mr. Gore also cited: "CIA analysts who strongly disagreed with the White House assertion that Osama bin Laden was linked to Saddam Hussein found themselves under pressure at work and became fearful of losing promotions and salary increases."

There is that tool fear rearing its ugly head again when the truth be damned only to meet the agenda of this administration ... the causal effect has been over 2,000 soldiers killed and tens of thousands of innocent Iraqis slaughtered.

When Mr. Gore stated: "Whenever power is unchecked and unaccountable it almost inevitably leads to mistakes and abuses. In the absence of rigorous accountability, incompetence flourishes. Dishonesty is encouraged and rewarded" ... doesn’t this describe this administration so far?

No wonder voter apathy continues to be a problem in this country when people feel fed up. Sometimes, I even ask myself: "Is this the best we have to offer ourselves and the world?" There are times when even I feel like throwing in the towel, but when I hear speeches such as the one Mr. Gore gave, it ignites me once more.

"Forty years have passed since the majority of Americans adopted television as their principal source of information. Its dominance has become so extensive that virtually all significant political communication now takes place within the confines of flickering 30-second television advertisements."

I fully believe that the mission of such sites as VHeadline.com and other e-publications must fill that void so that we can have intelligent political debate as a world community. Global issues such as terrorism, conservation, energy needs, poverty and so many other vital issues cannot fit into the construct of a thirty second spot on any news broadcast or commercial.

If we assign such debates to these thirty second spots the republic will fall because we have treated said debate like a McDonald’s commercial.

I could target each and every point of his speech, but it was so in depth and I think that Al Gore’s Speech must be read by the world community. People in this country have been amazed at how various nations in Latin America have shifted to the left and they did so by active participation within the democratic process. Many revolutions have taken place besides the Bolivarian one and where Chile elected Michelle Bachelet who is their first female president. She too is a socialist as reported by Newsday and where Bush congratulated her.

I find that odd considering he treats President Chavez as an enemy.

I think that the gist of Mr. Gore’s speech was our own active participation in our own republic where he said: "We have a duty as Americans to defend our citizens’ right not only to life but also to liberty and the pursuit of happiness. It is therefore vital in our current circumstances that immediate steps be taken to safeguard our Constitution against the present danger posed by the intrusive overreaching on the part of the Executive Branch and the president’s apparent belief that he need not live under the rule of law." This does not only apply to the Constitution, but other matters that do concern us and the only way is for every single citizen of this country to keep pressure on our elected officials in Washington, D.C. to make sure that they are indeed the checks and balances that this country was framed upon. I would also invite citizens from around the globe to do the same so that your voice is heard and where you think America is wrong in any decision that goes against your best interest.

If you truly want to take part in restoring America to its former glory, here is a useful tool that includes the phone numbers, fax numbers and email addresses of every single elected official in Washington D.C.

Tell these elected officials in Washington, D.C. that they work for you and not the other way around.
If you are not a United States citizen and feel angry when you are expected to follow a set of rules handed down by the Bush administration, call one of these elected officials and tell them, you do not listen to law breakers.

Let the second American Revolution begin!
