Statement by the General Secretary of the Lebanese Communist Party, Dr. Khaled Haddadeh on the occasion of the Emergency Meeting of Arab Foreign Ministers in Beirut.

After 25 days of continuous American-Israeli aggression against our country, barbaric aggression that has killed our women and children and committed wholesale massacres from Marwaheen to Qana; from Bint Jbeil to al-Jamaliyah and al-Qaa massacres that are still going on, After the Arab governments have sat silent out of subservience or complicity, paving the way for the American plan to attain all its objectives, After the Lebanese people have exhibited astonishing steadfastness, far beyond their expectations, awakening the people of the Arab countries who are subjected to the repression, suppression, and tyranny of the regimes, After all of that the Arab League Council has decided to hold an emergency meeting at the level of Arab foreign ministers in Beirut on Monday, 7 August. But what is both noteworthy and shameful is the fact that their excellencies the ministers might bearriving aboard an Egyptian military airplane, given permission to land at Beirut Airport by the Israeli Army. What disgrace and degradation! At a time when a few resistance fighters in our country are putting up an epic struggle in confrontation with the "invincible army" inflicting humiliating losses upon it, the Arab rulers beg for "permission to pass" from that army.

Where are your armies? Oh, excuse me, they are for protecting you from your people, not for confronting the army of Israel.

This meeting has been called supposedly to support Lebanon as it confronts Israeli aggression. Good. The Arab rulers have regained consciousness at last! But we fear that their consciousness is only a means for circumventing the steadfast Lebanese stand in order to facilitate the aggression and the scheme of their American friends. We are reviling that because we would prefer that solidarity to be with us. We would prefer that they take clear positions unadulterated by the American administration that has planned and guided the aggression and that supplies Israel with weapons made in factories run on Arab oil and Arab wealth. We would prefer that they take positions unaffected by the maneuvers of George Bush and Condoleezza Rice that buy time to prolong the armed aggression. The only criterion for true solidarity is for the Arab regimes to take an official stance against he American administration, a stance that commits oil and assets to the battle, that expels American ambassadors from the Arab world and the ambassadors of Israel too, cutting all relations with it. Such a position could stop the aggression against us and make America halt the endless massacres and the systematic destruction of our country.

On this occasion too, we turn to the Arab peoples to say: we have no hope in your rulers. What we hope for is to hear the raging torrent of your voices, rallying around the resistance and in favor of a genuinely democratic change that can sweep away those rulers. Beirut, 5 August 2006.
