On May 1, 2009, a spirited rally, with a huge crowd in attendance, was held in late afternoon in Lafayette Park, just north of the White House. The demonstration called for “just and humane immigration reform;” an end to raids and deportation of immigrants by the “U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement” (ICE) agents; a stop to “287g agreements,” which have resulted in police collaboration with ICE; and for the U.S. Congress to pass a “comprehensive Immigration Reform legislation in 2009.” The event was sponsored by the “National Capital Immigration Coalition” (NCIC).
