Canada Harbouring Ben Ali Family Thieves

The ’most notorious family member’ of the former Tunisian dictatorship Belhassen Trabelsi is hiding with his family, likely somewhere near Montreal. Members of Canada’s Tunisian community are ’very mad’ at the Stephen Harper Government’s handling of the Ben Ali file, claiming that Ottawa is shielding the fugitives and has been slow to freeze illegal, stolen assets of the fugitive billionaire.

"We expect the government not to let these people flee Canada," said Haroun Bouazzi, who’s part of Montreal based Collectif de Solidarite au Canada avec les Luttes Sociales en Tunisie. "We’re scared they’ll go somewhere where there’s no chance they’ll be extradicted to Tunisia." They plan to demonstrate in the national capital Ottawa next Wednesday.

The RCMP claimed Wednesday, that an international arrest warrant from Tunisia via an Interpol alert was insufficient to arrest under Canadian law. This, despite Interpol making clear that formal extradition requests would be forwarded via diplomatic channels once arrests were made.

Canada’s Minister of Immigration, Jason Kenney, said Wednesday, "I can’t comment on individuals because of the Privacy Act but I can tell you there are members of that family in Canada as permanent residents and they have a legal right to be here."
