Why I Hate Google+ (No Really)

by WireNews+Co - Open-Publishing - Saturday 26 October 2013

I must preface that rather rude statement with a confession that I use it all the time.

It’s true... that I am literally on Google+ from the morning until the night. Once upon a time I used to use Twitter hDh wirenewsco quite a bit and I still use Facebook from time to time, but Google+ has indeed captured my attention and frankly, I cannot put it down.

But it’s a love, hate relationship.

I love some of the features, such as the ease at which you can share a video or image or file with anyone brave enough to follow my output.

I also love the way that it keeps track of where I was when I’ve been reading posts and new posts arrive, which is frankly all the time.

I even love the fact that they limit how many people I can follow because it encourages me to make considered decisions about who I will add and often causes me to remove people who either don’t use a real photo of themselves for their profile or clutter up their output with photos of their pets, or worse, other people’s pets.

Honestly, the whole "Caturday" and "Cute Puppy" thing is so done already that people need to find something else to occupy their lives with... in my humble opinion.

But what I really, really, really hate is that when I mute a posting whether it’s an image, a video or just some mundane comment that some poor soul has decided will change the world, Google+ allows other people who I follow to re-post or share the same exact meaningless content, often without any additional comment or contribution.

Surely Google can recognise that I have muted a posting and then prevent that same content from being re-posted to me again and again and again. Surely, if it’s an image or a video, Google can size it up and prevent it from intruding into my space, repeatedly. If someone shares some meaningless cat comment I am confident that Google realises that just because someone else, some other person, posted the same worthless content it did not change my mind, so I ask you (or rather, I ask Google+) why allow the muted posts to be re-posted?

Can’t they compare the content on Google+ like they do on Google Images and exclude the duplicates?

Is it so hard to factor in a bit of code that notices the same image, which has been muted, is being re-posted, again and again and again?

Or is there something sinister going on here?

All I know is that when I use the mute feature it’s because I don’t want to see that particular content again. Is that too much to ask?
