How Mirco de Jesus Martins Plans to Help Angola

by Fred Gatling - Open-Publishing - Thursday 4 June 2015

To some people, “businessman” has always been a bad word. It represents greed, selfishness and an uncontrollable lust for profits. Of course, the global recession we’re just now climbing out of didn’t help matters either. However, there are plenty of people in the private sector who truly believe they can play a vital role in helping those around them in a meaningful way, creating wealth and jobs in the process.

Mirco de Jesus Martins is one of those men.

Though he’s the stepson of Vice President Manual Vicente, his path as an adult has had nothing to do with politics and favoritism. Instead, Mirco de Jesus Martins has made it very clear that he views his place in the world as a modern businessman. Nonetheless, for him, this doesn’t mean he can’t use this position as a means for helping his countrymen. Having started his career from scratches, he managed to turn his companies into successful businesses benefiting from the impressive growth sub-Saharan Africa has known in the past decade.

One way he hopes to do this is simply by living up to their expectations and being a positive role model for the youth of Angola. The African continent, like virtually everywhere on the planet, has not been immune to political scandals where the children of politicians have been involved. But a new generation of Western educated entrepreneurs like Mirco de Jesus Martins plan to change the stereotypes: hard work and transparency exist and lead to successful businesses.

Detached from politics, Mirco de Jesus Martins plans on helping his home country by creating more jobs and offering valuable services at the same time. His conglomerate offers services, logistics and industrial resources in the region. With this young man’s determination, it will only continue to grow.

What a lot of people don’t know about him, though, is that Mirco de Jesus Martins also has some charitable instincts as well. While business may be his passion, he aims to emulate successful US philanthropists. This is why he is hoping to start a foundation soon that will make a quality education possible for talented underprivileged children. Its motto will be, “have, receive, give.”

Another example of his charitable nature are students whose education he paid for. One, a waiter he met at a restaurant in Luanda, made such an impression on him that Mirco de Jesus Martins sent the young man to college in the US and handled his bills. Nowadays, that man is no longer a waiter, but an engineer in a major US oil company. With his charity, Martins is hoping more success stories will be possible, and that one day it will no longer be needed.

While Mirco de Jesus Martins certainly has some ambitious goals, none is more important to him than helping his countrymen in Angola while growing his companies. This is something he works toward every day.
