STRATFORD - A serviceman, apparently distraught over the prospect of being sent back to the war in Iraq, threatened to kill himself as he stood naked and screaming outside his house.

Police took the man into custody at his Fernwood Drive house. He was taken for treatment to Bridgeport Hospital.

Dispatched to investigate a report of a possible suicide attempt Thursday, officers saw the man naked with blood on his body in front of the garage area, police said. As officers approached, the man yelled at them and ran back into the house, according to police.

After struggling with officers, the man told police that he was scheduled to be sent back to Iraq in January, but didn’t want to because he would be forced to kill more people, police said.

The man, who said that he had been drinking, told officers that "he just wanted to die," police said.

After Stratford Emergency Medical Services transported the man to Bridgeport Hospital, he attempted to grab a guard by the throat before he was subdued and placed in restraints, police said.

Officers recovered a kitchen knife, a pair of metal clamps, green ropes and suicide notes covered with blood from the house, according to police.

John Cappiello, a hospital spokesman, said veterans can get psychiatric counseling from either the hospital or a Veterans Affairs facility, depending on their duty status.

The hospital has numerous doctors on staff with experience in veterans’ issues, he said.

  • Where are the compassionate conservatives...oh yeah, busy planning another war.

So who cares about this guy, I didn’t see it on MICHNEWS, it’s not important.

Support our troops, send some more!

    • Where are all the senators and congressmens offspring ? Why aren’t Bushs’ floosy daughters joining the good fight against those heathens ??

  • Poor guy, he’s not really in any fit condition to be sent back. Hope he’s able to to get some therapy.

    • Anyone who would join the military in this day and age deserves what they get. Who would sign up to go murder people for money? And when it comes to compassion, they do not deserve any just like they have no compassion for the people they go kill. Send the murdering bastard over there he might serve as an example to others who think going in the military is a good thing.

    • i know it seems that way... but the sad truth is recruiters are in schools, seducing young boys with dreams of flying helicopters and blowing away bad guys. They get 17 yr old kids in high school to commit to the military, even offering them a $10,000 signing bonus and 6 months to spend it before deployment.

These kids have spent 10yrs in the dumbed down school system, you can’t blame them. You can blame the recruiters, school officials that let the military on campus, and bush/congress for starting this unjust war.

    • My son, like many others, joined simply because he could not find a job, and we are unable to pay for college. He joined just before we invaded Iraq, so had no idea he would end up there. He just recently went back after being home for R&R, and he was not the person that left home. There was a sadness in his eyes I cannot explain, and will never understand, not having seen what he has seen. So be prepared to have a chunk of this generation as maladjusted and out of the loop as so many of the Vietnam Vets. The damage has been done to these kids, I just hope there will be help for them when they get back.

    • I’m sorry but I still think anyone, even if they are a teenager, that really believes it is okay to kill other people for money does not deserve any breaks. To think that someone can grow up and have years to form opinions about right and wrong and still believe it is okay to kill others that have done nothing to them, do not deserve me or you or anyone to feel sorry for them when the going gets ugly dangerous and unpleasant. No matter what your age, you should not be a willing participant to be part of killing for a living, there is no excuse that could make this okay, not college, not unemployment, not anything.

The people who join up for this kind of thing deserve to be victims just like those they victimize, it is their karma, or as Jesus said "do unto others as you would have them do unto you." It is their fate, they should reap what they sow.

    • If you feel that way you are just as bad as them. You have no compassion so how can you judge others.

    • An eye for an eye.

  • It is frightening to think about all of the war-freaked-out, stone-cold killers who are returning home from Afghanistan and Iraq. War makes soldiers used to killing and it’s not easy for them to just switch off that kind of mindset when they get home.
