London - Hollywood star Gwyneth Paltrow has said she has no intention of leaving London and returning to the United States "because it’s a strange time to be an American now".

The Oscar-winning actress, who is married to Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, told the Toronto Globe and Mail she considers herself more European, the British Press Association reported on Friday.

"I’ve always been drawn to Europe. America is such a young country, with an adolescent swagger about it," she said.

"But I feel that I have a more European sensibility, a greater respect for the multicultural nature of the globe. And it’s a strange time to be an American now."

"I feel like we’re really in trouble. I just had a baby and thought ’I don’t want to live there.’ Bush’s anti-environment, pro-war policies are a disgrace."

Paltrow, 32, put her luxurious New York mansion up for sale earlier this year and spends most of her time in London with Martin and their young daughter, Apple. - Sapa-dpa

  • Dear Ms Paltrow,

Big fan. Thanks for the words of wisdom. If you would like to share some of your wealth with those of us who are compelled by economics to endure the disgrace of living in Bush’s America, please send me a check. I am sure that sale of your Manhattan suite pulled in enough to set me up in a little pied-a-tierre in a civilized country, like say...oh, I don’t know, Norway or Canada? Granted, you can’t rescue the whole country, but you could help me.

  • Tony’s Blair’s England is different? Huh? How?

    • You’re absolutely right. How is Tony Blair’s United Kingdom, whose central government is even more controlling of its people than the US Federal Government, & continues to support this bloody, irrational war in Iraq with British blood and British money, any different than Bush’s America? Then it must be for entirely cultural and personal reasons why Gwyn chose to stay in London and not in New York.
So much of any individual’s politics is a reflection of their cultural affinities, rather than a keen appraisal of what kind of Social Contract should there be between a people and the government they have chosen to protect their lives, liberty and property.
The world as a whole, not just America and Britain, will remain in a medieval timewarp so long as the majority of all the people, regardless of race, culture and religion, continue to let only their emotional responses guide them when assessing possible solutions and political agendas.
Political salesmen like Blair and Bush know very well that the great majority of their constituents find it very difficult if not impossible to use any reasoning faculties that they may possess when making political choices. This is how they attain and hold power over them.

  • It’s nice to be part of the highly privileged class Ms Paltrow and have pleasant choices as a result, but let’s face it, this option is not available to the majority of Americans.
Indeed, we have just learnt it recently, that the underclass of New Orleans didn’t even got the means to evacuate before a dangerous storm hit them.
So the majorityt of the population has no coice to flee, but instead has to face down and fight the present regime in Washington.

  • Why should I leave this is my country. We have been taken over by a bunch of elite scum bags.
Revolution will come and yes a lot of us are prepared to die better to fight than to live under a oppressive government of the rich.
