Bus fire ’kills 20’ Rita evacuees

A bus carrying elderly evacuees from Hurricane Rita has caught fire on a gridlocked motorway, killing up to 20 people, a police spokesman says.

The bus was engulfed in flames, causing a 17-mile (27-km) tailback on the Interstate 45 highway, the main route north from the Gulf Coast to Dallas.

Oxygen used by the elderly people could have contributed to the blaze, a police spokesman told AP news agency.

He said early indications were that the cause of the fire was mechanical.

"Deputies were unable to get everyone off the bus," spokesman Don Peritz said.

The bus was reduced to a charred shell, with just its frame remaining.

Officer Peritz said there were a number of explosions, apparently caused by oxygen containers on board the vehicle.

He said the driver, who survived the inferno, repeatedly went back onto the bus to try to rescue passengers.

    • Dude, it’s good to vent, but the foul language does interfere with your message which is a good one. There should be room on the front page for both stories. I just hope the turn out is half a million. You can’t hide that kind of thing. The MSM won’t be able to keep up the deception much longer.
