MIAMI - A passenger who claimed to have a bomb in a carry-on bag was shot and killed by a federal air marshal Wednesday on a jetway to an American Airlines plane that had arrived from Colombia, officials said.

Homeland Security Department spokesman Brian Doyle said the dead passenger was a 44-year-old U.S. citizen.

It was the first time since the Sept. 11 attacks that an air marshal had shot at a passenger or suspect, he said. A witness said that the man frantically ran down the aisle of the Boeing 757 and that a woman with him said he was mentally ill.

The passenger, who indicated there was a bomb in the bag, was confronted by air marshals but ran off the aircraft, Doyle said.

The marshals pursued and ordered the passenger to get on the ground, but the man did not comply and was shot when apparently reaching into the bag, Doyle said. Authorities did not immediately say whether any bomb was found.

Passenger Mary Gardner told WTVJ in Miami that the man ran down the aisle from the rear of the plane. "He was frantic, his arms flailing in the air," she said. She said a woman followed, shouting, "My husband! My husband!"

Gardner said she heard the woman say her husband was bipolar and had not had his medication.

The plane, Flight 924, had arrived from Medellin, Colombia, at 12:16 p.m. and was scheduled to depart two hours later for Orlando, American Airlines spokesman Tim Wagner said.

"I don’t know yet if the passenger had been on the plane and was getting off, or was starting to board the aircraft," he said.

The shooting happened shortly after 2 p.m., suggesting passengers may have already been preparing to depart, he said. About 105 passengers scheduled to fly to Orlando, he said.

Martin Gonzalez, spokesman for Colombia’s civil aviation agency, said the flight "left normally with no problems."

There were only 32 air marshals at the time of the Sept. 11 attacks. The Bush administration hired thousands more afterward, though the exact number is classified.

Because of the ongoing madness we avoid the use of American based airlines. It’s getting to dangerous now. We live in Hawaii and we use JAL or Canadian, in order to get rid of homeland security madness on the west coast. From airports of civilized nations one can easily reach the final destination in Europe. It is also cheaper, the service is much better and the planes are newer not like those rattle raps flown by American companies.
Ask yourself why Air France and KLM could generate a growth of 12 % just on North Atlantic flights!
Also America is in war with the world, which makes it possible that highjacking or rocket attacks can happen any time on American based airliners.

  • Just another example of ongoing madness and homeland insecurity.

  • Well that’s one way to take care of the mentally deranged. I’m sure this administration will give it some thought.

  • This is almost identical to the story of the London police officer who shot the hoodlem who was running away into the subway after the London bombings. I feel sorry for that air martial, who will now have to live with this for the rest of his life, when he was probably doing his exact benevolent duty to protect others. Who’s for giving air martials cans of mace instead??

    • Turns out that "hoodlem" that you speak about was an innocent man. The lies that were concocted at the start of that event are what is happening here.

Several sources in non-MSM are reporting that the man did not speak anything about a bomb. The wife is continuing to say that because of the lack of his medication during his trip, he became frantic and wanted to get off the plane. There was no bag with him when the Air Marshals has him on the floor of the plane. Apperantly there were more than three Air Marshals on the plane at this time — Stange, that there shuold be that many on one flight.

One of the three (or more) Air Marshals held another passenger to the seat with a gun to his face.

There is something completely marking this as a "false flag"/set up kind of thing.

      Welcome to America.

  • Stop using American planes if you travel abroad. You get better service, newer planes, much better prices and even more safety. Who, in the hell wants to be a target for this "air cowboys".

The men never mentioned the word bomb, according to eye witnesses! After he was shot, they proud officers took pride in the standard procedure the implanted a detonator in the backpack of the killed passengers and blow it up in front of the plane. Could America ridicule itself more?
