> Homeland Security To Confiscate Bank Safe Deposit Box Contents

6 April 2006, 09:00

Speaking of safe deposit boxes, I discovered that bank employees (if crooked) can actually gain access to Your box. A bank teller calmly told Me exactly how it could easily be done in the early ’90s when I discovered My safe deposit box had been tapped into. She worked at a different bank of course. Apparently on occasion a bank employee or two will work after hours. The unissued safe deposit box keys are kept on the inside of a cabinet door or similar spot all nice and neatly hung on nails or small hooks. These keys are not issued, therefore don’t have to be under tight security. However, if a shady employee takes some of those keys and makes wax impressions from them, once these keys are issued those employees have access to those rented boxes. Even if they’re not numbered, it wouldn’t take too awful long to use their master key and the duplicated keys to try them in enough boxes to make a hit. Access would probably have to be during banking hours or the employee would have to be a high ranking one. Darn, another reason to abandon Your safe deposit box.
