The Media’s Rapidly Falling Apart

17 September 2007, 11:06

Excellent report. For more on the subject see: http://abcnews.go.com/International... and http://www.guardian.co.uk/usa/story...

This is merely the latest sign in a long string of events signifying how lax news standards are at traditionally trustworthy news organizations. The turn to Infotainment, the streamlining of news teams for the sake of maximizing profits as well as the desire of executives to substantiate their political views have all led to severe deterioration of accurate reportage.

To be fair, the syndrome exists for both right and left wing organizations. See: http://www.cnsnews.com/news/viewsto...

Arguably, the most disturbing fact about this loss of veracity is the lack of public outrage. This country was led into an illegal, immoral war based on contrived facts that no major news organization questioned with a consistent and assiduous effort. Indeed, news outlets like the NY Times bolstered the so-called evidence and then waited entirely too late before examining how Judith Miller and others submitted half-baked stories.

The damage these situations cause to the public trust in general is incalcuable. And oddly enough, the major news outlets are the first to incriminate internet sources as being untrustworthy. You know, I’d rather take my chances with bellaciao.org than blindly rely on the NY Times and ABC to feed me more snake oil that supports the back-office Neocon point of view.

Publishers and editors, you’d better find alternative employment because the days of the tradional media sources are numbered. Americans have had quite enough of your bullshit. If you haven’t yet caught the Bill Moyers series on the media on PBS, please do so. It’s quite illuminating.
