> So this is what they call the new, ’free’ Iraq

I don’t think Fisk hates the U.S., he is an award winning reporter who has the guts and the integrity to say it as it is. He is welcomed in the States at all times to lecture in universities and other centers of knowledge, because his journalism is corroborated and objective.

Having said that, I wouldn’t say 60% unemployment among Iraqis is exactly a sign of a booming economy. Further. if you consider that Iraq had 0 cellphones prior to the invasion, because of 13 years of sanctions, then any number of cellphones in the hands of the rich class is a huge improvement indeed.

As far as cars, Iraqis had more cars per capita than any other country in Asia prior to the war. The sad story now, is that most of the cars geting into the country, are being cannibalized for parts to be used to fix those already in use. Not even one NEW car was sold in Iraq since March 20, 2003, the day of the invasion.

As for hope...a recent poll by an Amercian pollster found that the vast majority of Iraqis want the occupation of their country to end immediately, this why the resistance of the Iraqis to the American presence is on the increase, even with the installation of the interim puppet government.

The Iraqis have the right to hope, just like other people suffering from illegal occupation, for freedom. And freedom means a land free of foreign occupation troops, just like the U.S. of America.
