> Uri Avnery: the Skin of the Bear

Yasser Arafat is hardly the leader described anymore. His figurehead status has declined - he is more the grandfather in a nursing home who tells triumphant stories from the past. The corruption which misplaces most of $5 billion is disgraceful and can not but be placed at his feet. His failure to deliver a state has dissapointed the Palestinians as much as the failure of the Israelis to leave and that of the Arab world to unite together. Why can Hamas and Jihad and Al-Aksa not join together in governing? History is full of revolutionaries who learned to holster their weapons and hoist their pens.
