> The January 7th Problem (News Article with Commentary)

12 January 2005, 00:22

Well, at least the story made the paper somewhere. In my town, which is the sprawling metropolis of Phoenix, the story didn’t even make the "briefs" section.

I think that, considering the circumstances, it is my duty as a person who believes that democracy is good for society to stand up against any infraction to the fragility of this political system and to push for continued social progress to eliminate oppression and acts of indignity to the human race.
For those who say that objecting to Bush’s inauguration only shows the world that we lack solidarity or that we are unpatriotic, I say yes, the US does lack solidarity but no, we are not unpatriotic. We want to show the world that not all of us care more about oil, big macs, and SUV’s, than the fate of children of third world countries, the fate of our democracy, and the fate of the world as a result of unchecked capitalism, or Anarcho-capitalism, which, in my opinion, is a doctrinal system which is leading us to forms of tyranny and oppression that have few counterparts in human history. The idea of "free contract" between the potentate and his starving subject is a joke.

We ARE a nation divided, and we are a WORLD divided as well. We must, in our minds, push for social progress, for responsible capitalism and a leadership that is not seperate from the masses. I’m not calling for socialism, i’m calling for peace, justice, and liberty for all people. That, in my view, is far more patriotic than taping an american flag to my SUV and saying "Bush won, who cares if it was fraudulent, get over it and F-you"

A nation that has lost its sense of what liberty means is a nation ripe for exploitation.

If we don’t protect our democracy now, there will be no one to protect our democracy in the future.
