Some playwright once called the Human species "Killer Apes." We certainly have the capabilities of destroying ourselves in the quest for wealth, power, oil, fame, sex, security, etc. We have the capabilities of destroying almost any species (except for cockroaches, ants and rats) and today the Bush administration showed how perfectly adapted cruise missiles are for killing Muslims a thousand miles away. We know that pity, compassion, kindness are part of the human condition, but Bush has shown us how all that can be overrriden in the quest for world domination, for "legacy", for superstitious nonsense. So we are an ambiguous species, capable of many things. Bush showed us the dark side of humanity (carelessness, ambition, power play, egomania, etc.) We long for a change of regime when we can return to what were once normal values inherent in a democracy where no one is above the law, where arrogance does not excuse murder, where wealth does not take precedence over everything. But how long is too long?
