Mr Powell,

As you probably know, more than twenty indymedia news websites have been shut down around the world on Thursday, October 7, after the seizure of two servers in United Kingdom. According to the Agence France Presse, an FBI spokesman said that it was not an FBI operation, but that the FBI was cooperating under the terms of an international treaty. It seems that a subpoena has been issued at the request of Italian and Swiss authorities.

Consequently, many french news websites have been closed , and some of them still suffer data loss at the moment. Here, in France, we do not accept that such investigations could lead to close _innocent_ french websites. Seizing entire servers hosting many websites because of one post is basically unacceptable since this shuts down all the hosted websites. These collateral effects on our freedom of speech and information are a heavy political mistake that we will remember for a long time, as many people will do in other democratic countries.

As in french law we don’t know what is a "gag" order, and as we are -in our own country- victims of your actions, you should now at least explain us what has exactly happened , and who is responsible for that attack against our freedom of speech. No mistake : attacking freedom of speech on the internet, i.e. all around the world, will be very unpopular on the internet, i.e. all around the world.

Avec nos salutations les plus citoyennes,
