1,000 Tunisian lawyers to defend Saddam

by Open-Publishing - Sunday 11 July 2004

One thousand Tunisian lawyers say they are ready to defend ousted Iraqi President Saddam Hussein in his trial for genocide and crimes against humanity.

Fawzi Bin Murad, president of the National Committee for Defending Saddam Hussein, said Wednesday "more than a thousand Tunisian lawyers are ready to travel to Baghdad to defend Saddam Hussein’s right for a fair trial and for defending himself properly."

He said a team from the Tunisian committee will travel to Amman, Jordan, soon to discuss with Jordanian counterparts the procedure for entering Iraq to defend Saddam.

"We want to enter Baghdad in a large convoy carrying all the lawyers from the various parts of the world who want to defend the Iraqi president who is imprisoned by the occupants and their collaborators," Bin Murad said.

He said the Tunisian lawyers have addressed a letter to the head of the Iraqi Bar Association Kamal Hamdoun requesting the registration of their names in the list of Saddam’s defenders as required by Iraqi laws.
