An Iraqi official announced on Thursday that at least 2,000 people were killed and 1,600 detained so far in the U.S.-led Fallujah offensive.
Qassem Dawoud, the interim government’s national security adviser, didn’t provide any breakdown of fatalities among U.S. soldiers, Iraqi troops, fighters and civilians.
As of Thursday, the death toll was "more than 2,085", Dawoud said, adding that at least 1,600 people have been arrested.
U.S. officials in Iraq had previously said that 54 U.S. (...)

The recipe for civil war

Najaf was bombed in August. Samarra was bombed in September. Sadr City was bombed in October. Fallujah was bombed in November. Mosul may be bombed in December. And Kirkuk may be bombed in January.
This is the calendar in the runup to the Iraqi elections set for January 30 next year. Then there will be another set of questions. Will the Iraqi elections be stolen? Will votes "disappear"? Instead of Florida or Ohio, will there be demands for recounts in Fallujah and (...) -

By Askold Krushelnycky in Kiev
Ukraine’s contested election took an extraordinary turn yesterday when Viktor Yushchenko, the opposition leader, declared himself president before parliament as 200,000 of his supporters marched on the presidential palace.
"Ukraine is on the brink of a civil conflict," Mr Yushchenko warned, the day’s dramatic events unfolding (...) -

You should see my inbox. "You lying liberals are the scum of the earth. I hope you die."
Last night I got another threatening phone call. The red state cult Christians do NOT like us blue states at all. And the feeling is mutual. "The Confederate states suck eggs. How can 59 million Americans be so dumb!"
This bickering is not a luxury we can afford. Right now, we are like some self-important mice trying to beat each other up — while the cat just stands by and (...) -

Big Media’s Democracy Double Standards

13 commentsThe Washington Post and other leading American newspapers are up in arms about the legitimacy of a presidential election where exit polls showed the challenger winning but where the incumbent party came out on top, amid complaints about heavy-handed election-day tactics and possibly rigged vote tallies.
In a lead editorial, the Post cited the divergent exit polls, along with voter claims about ballot irregularities, as prime reasons for overturning the official results. For its part, the (...) -

2 commentsIran has nukes - they really really do! Scout’s honor! Cross my heart and hope to die!
by Justin Raimondo
We live in a recurring nightmare. That’s the only conclusion one can draw from today’s headlines, which, as we draw closer to a confrontation with Iran, bear an eerie resemblance to yesterday’s breaking news. It seems like only yesterday that a Middle Eastern exile group – the Iraqi National Congress (INC) – was feeding the U.S. government "intelligence" that drew a fearsome (...) -

I’m writing this because the Bush administration with it’s plan to widen the embargo on Cuba has ridiculed itself again.

We also know China has multilateral agreements with Iran and their is hope that
the Bush administration is more cautious about launching another ambush to a so (...) -

There have been no reports of the US military using napalm in Falluja and no independent verification of the claims. (...) -
