Vermont towns seek to impeach Bush, pull U.S. troops
March 7th, 2007 1:01 am By Jason Szep / Reuters
BOSTON, March 6 - More than 30 Vermont towns passed resolutions on Tuesday seeking to impeach President Bush, while at least 16 towns in the tiny New England state called on Washington to withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq.
Known for picturesque autumn foliage, colonial inns, maple sugar and old-fashion dairy farms, Vermont is in the vanguard of a grass-roots protest movement to impeach (…)

The Sacco and Vanzetti Case Revisited
7 March 2007“Great trials express—bear—the soul of a nation...” The late historian, Arthur Schlesinger Jr. (1)
It read like the kind of brutal crime—especially in that Roaring Twenties era—that might have been pulled off by gang headed by a trigger happy John Dillinger, or someone of that ilk. At 3 PM, April 15, 1920, two men robbed, and then shot to death, a shoe factory paymaster carrying about $16,000 in cash and his security guard. The incident took place in South Braintree, MA, near Boston. The (…) -
How The Americans Make War on Women and Children
6 March 2007Why I fled George Bush’s war
Joshua Key, 28, was a poor, uneducated Oklahoma country boy who saw the U.S. army and its promised benefits — from free health care to career training — as the ticket to a better life. In 2002, not yet 24 but already married and the father of two , Key enlisted. He says his recruiting officer promised he’d never be deployed abroad, but a year later he was in Iraq. Only 24 hours after arriving, as Key recounts in The Deserter’s Tale (Anansi), he experienced his (…) -
DIE HARDS FOR BUSH
6 March 2007In this instance I’m not speaking about the "Die Hards" who are currently being killed and/or maimed for corporatocracy in Afghanistan and Iraq. No, I’m speaking about those ever diminishing numbers of loyal Bush supporers.
Bush’s latest CBS approval rating number is down to 29!..the lowest of his pathetic Washington career. But hold on!..there are the true "Die Hards" who will never abandon this miserable excuse for a president.
Despite this administration’s crass and endless (…) -

Barbarians at the Gates: The sad fate of two armies.
5 March 2007Once upon a time the Romans had a great and powerful Army. Just as with our own (US) history, they were formed from volunteers from a wide slice of society; men with real skills and dedication. Unlike our own military, the Romans had plenty of fighters from the elite class (naturally they had better armor!), but there were many similarities too. For instance, the average Roman foot soldier had to carry 66 pounds worth of equipment on his back...almost the exact weight average of the U.S. (…)

Somalia
5 March 2007THE United States, heavily engaged in Afghanistan and Iraq in its global war on terror, is now fighting on a third front in Somalia (1). Washington assembled an anti-terrorist coalition in the Gulf of Aden in 2001 and it is clear from recent air raids and the deployment of US battleships that it regards the Horn of Africa as part of the theatre of operations in its battle against al-Qaida.
It is up against the Union of Islamic Courts, funded by Mogadishu traders who had had enough of (…) -
Why is the left so gauche?
5 March 2007The French presidential campaign is a clear example of how difficult it can be for the left, in a democratic country, to achieve power. It raises a perennial question: why is the left always so disorganised, divided by internecine and self-destructive squabbles in countries where the political spectrum is, roughly, equally divided?
In France in particular - which since 1978 has voted every government (left or right) out of office after one term - why does the outgoing interior minister and (…) -
Ideas: The Hatred Within Democracy Unmasked by Adorno
5 March 2007By Grégoire Chamayou
In the United States during the 1950s, Adorno was exploring the mental and social landscape favorable to implanting antidemocratic ideas.
The Authoritarian Personality, by Theodore Wiesengrund Adorno, translated from the English by Hélène Frappat. Éditions Allia, 2007, 440 pages, 25 euros.
Why do people of the same social background adopt different and even opposite political opinions? A seemingly banal answer would be saying that it is because they do not have the (…) -
CIA torture: A first step towards justice for Al-Zery, but what about Agiza?
5 March 2007Swedish GUE/NGL MEP Jens Holm, a member of the parliament’s CIA investigation committee, is supportive of the Swedish government’s decision to revoke the deportation order for Mohammed Al-Zery. It was in December of 2001 that Mohammed Al-Zery and Ahmed Agiza were arrested by Swedish security police, with the help of the CIA, and deported to Egypt. They were tortured during both the deportation and their time in prison in Egypt. "This is a first step towards justice for Mohammed Al-Zery. (…)
